Online Pricing Course -- April 3rd-14th

Almost daily, I hear from photographers struggling to make ends meet. Talented photographers who really deserve better for themselves and their families. My class is an honest look at what it takes to make your business work for you--not for me. Not according to some rule book created 10 years ago or more....created by you to meet your family's unique needs.

In my pricing class, I will talk about what your time away from your family is really worth. We will examine what you need to be able to meet your financial goals while we take a hard look at your income and expenditures as they are right now. It's an honest look at how to create a business that has the possibility of success instead of constantly setting yourself up for failure.

When you sign up for this class, you will receive:

  • pre-recorded lectures for you to listen at your own pace
  • assignments created to go along with each lecture to help you work through your own financial plan and create pricing that works for you
  • a private online group discussion during the course for you to ask Dana(and the others taking the course) your questions
  • the option to be added to a private Facebook group for alumni only. This group is a wonderful resource of talented professionals with experience and expertise to help you reach your goals. There is no point in creating an action plan, if you don't have the support system to help you follow through with it.

See what some awesome people had to say about the course:

“I’ve been shooting professionally for almost 10 years, the last 5 have been full-time. You would think that by now I would have had a better handle on the business side of things, especially my pricing. I, like many others, raise their prices very slowly over time, or not at all sometimes, out of fear. Fear of appearing way too expensive, fear of losing existing clients, fear that we are not worth it. Dana taught me how to move through this and realize that I am absolutely worth what I should be asking for! She helped me get really honest with myself about my numbers, something I’d always intended to do, but never did. I am about to change the way I do things with my business, and I am beyond excited about it and can’t wait to see what the future holds. Of equal importance, I realized that I’m not alone, and that we are all in this together. This class is beyond what I thought it would be, as I now feel supported and cheered on from within the industry. And an extra bonus? Dana’s laugh is absolutely amazing and her insight, invaluable. Dana Pugh rocks!”

— Annie Daiva

“I met Dana two years ago at a photography retreat, where I was instantly drawn to her honesty and her ability to make anything fun. Last year she invited me to be a part of the 5 minute project, which is something she started and shared with photographers to join along side her. I think this speaks volumes of her heart for the photography community. She could have kept the project to herself, but she choose to watch us and many others grow in it. She truly wants the best for others, and has given not only me, but so many others the tools on how to be successful in this business. This past spring she came to BC and mentored a group of us on the business side of photography. That course taught me to value my time, and opened my eyes to things I never would have seen on my own, I can truthfully say she changed my life and my family’s life. I am so grateful to have met her, to have had her influence in my career and I know I wouldn’t be where I am today without her encouragement and knowledge.

— Kyla Ewert

“Truly, I cannot thank Dana enough for everything she gave us (including her heart) during our time together. Her passion for the industry is refreshing and I left feeling so inspired and excited. Not only was Dana an amazing teacher and incredibly resourceful, she was a blast to spend time with as she came with a ton of laughter and her heart on her sleeve (my kind of person). I would highly recommend Dana’s workshop to anyone wanting to take their passion and business to the level of success. You will not regret it...and BONUS, you get to hang with the talented “Dana Pugh” for the day, total win!
Forever grateful, thank you.”

Alberta Pricing Workshops

Hello there!!!!

So, as I have promised on social media, I am going to do a few in person pricing workshops this year. The first one will be held in my own studio in Okotoks on February 11th starting at 9:00am. This will be a little bit different than my online class as it will not only include the full pricing workshop, but I will also debut my new marketing class called 'Marketing Yourself: Beyond Social Media'.

The second one will be on February 25th in Edmonton, AB at this gorgeous studio space.

In March, I am looking at coming to Fort McMurray, AB and Vancouver, BC!!! So watch this space for that information!

In my pricing class, we will talk about what your time away from your family is really worth. I use industry created guidelines and ten years experience as a working photographer, to help you do the math and create a plan that will work for you and your area. This isn't a class where I tell you to 'copy me'....this is a class where I ask you the tough questions about what you want for your business and you create a business designed by you for your clients. I'm not going to tell you that in person ordering is the only way to do it. Nor am I going to insist you sell digital files. We will look at all the possibilities and the real life numbers required for you to reach your own goals. Don't take my word for it--just look at the reviews for this class in the posts below. The best thing is, after the class ends, I will add you to the private online class of kick ass creatives who are working towards creating a sustainable business. This is the most supportive and creative group on Facebook where we lift each other up together. Where everyone believes that the industry is stronger if we are all succeeding.

In my brand new marketing class, we will take a look at the next steps towards helping you find clients. So often, when rock star photographers are asked how they market, all they can tell you is 'social media' or 'word of mouth'...well, any 'every day photographer' will tell you that social media and word of mouth alone is not enough. So, we will all work together to create unique marketing plans that work for you and your personality--as well as your family's schedule. We will help you find opportunities that already exist within your own network and help you create an action plan as to how to make those opportunities a reality.

Each of these classes on their own are $200Cdn. This year, I am doing them together in person for $300Cdn. When my in person workshops for the year are done, I will make the marketing class available online. So, be the first to know...the first in the loop ;)

I have classes in the works for Chicago, New York, Vancouver and Toronto or Ottawa(or maybe both).

***Just a note that this is nonrefundable, but you can transfer it to another person should you find yourself unable to attend the course.

I am overwhelmed by the response this go around. I am willing to go to certain cities should someone be wiling to host and help find a minimum of 25 students to attend. The course can be done in person in a one day workshop. If you are local to Calgary, I am considering a Calgary one day workshop in my studio in February, but have not settled on a date yet.

Thank you everyone!!

Community Over Competition

Hello!!

I've decided to host an afternoon for local family and children's photographers in my studio. I'll be there willing to answer any questions you have on any topic--I make a mean crock pot stew, but I would also love to answer your industry specific questions. While I was in Toronto, I had the pleasure of connecting with Kelly Redinger and Nicole Ashley(plus, I also know Carey Nash and Kat Gill) and when I saw that they were hosting an evening for Edmonton wedding photographers, I didn't want the Calgary and area Family Photographers to be left out!!

When I was first starting out, I used to go to photography meet ups all the time. Connecting with other local photographers helped me build my business and gave me real photographers to connect with whenever I felt lonely. Photography can be an isolating career at times and it's nice to have opportunities to not feel so lonely. So, I have decided to host an event in my studio for us all to connect and share knowledge. My studio space is limited, so tickets are also limited. I am charging $5 so that I can provide some drinks and snacks for everyone. And--just so you know, my studio is in Okotoks(it's closer than you think).

Community Over Competition Event

Where: Dana's studio(she will email you the address)

When: Thursday, November 10th @1:00-3:00pm

I hope to see lots of you there!!

Dana

Honestly...

hello :)

I feel like I need to start with a little background information. Last week, I spoke at a conference for photographers in Toronto. Speaking is something that I have done only a handful of times and I was determined to really nail down my process. To finally get it 'right'...I wanted my presentation to be fun and informative. Personal, but professional. All the while remaining true to myself--a little bit quirky and chaotic. ha. And, I am proud to say that I was very successful. It was by far my best presentation yet. I spoke on the first day and rode the high of a job well done for the rest of the conference.

If you don't ever do things like this, what you may not realize is exactly how much work goes into preparing to present. For me, I have thought about it for a year and it still took me a solid week of work to feel confident and ready. A week when I had to put all other work aside(except for shooting). And, then there is the week of the conference itself. A week away from my family, from my studio, from my clients...it's time consuming, exhausting and exhilarating. As an educator, I want so badly to give as much of my knowledge as I can to everyone who wants to soak up whatever I have to offer. It's why I have gone the route of educator. I love it almost as much as shooting. So, I want to be present for every person who wants to chat with me, buy me a drink, or have dinner with me throughout the week. What I am trying to say here is that no single educator does it for the money. It's a way of giving back to an industry that we all love so very much. And, to be honest since we are speaking honestly, I am a wee bit frightened to write this post as possibly, my teaching opportunities will dry up because I am speaking out, but I speak candidly in my pricing course about valuing yourself and your time...so, because of that, it feels hypocritical of me not to say anything.

A year before last week's conference, I signed a contract. A contract that promised my expenses covered, as well as, a speaker's fee. That contract was broken. In fact, all of the speakers had contracts that were broken. All of us are out thousands of dollars in flights, hotel, and speaker fees. All of us left families at home, studios and clients unattended to support this conference, but received no compensation. So, why am I speaking out?  Well, the first reason is simply that I think consumers of photography conferences have a right to know that this has happened. They have a right to know that the money that they paid the conference organizer in good faith was not given to the artists that they all came to see share their knowledge. At least one further conference is planned and if I had bought a ticket to that conference, I would want to know this information. Secondly, I want any one who has a current contract with this individual to know how we have all been treated so that they can make a decision about how to proceed with that contract with the full knowledge of the situation. If they have any questions, I want to invite them to email me and we can chat. I can tell you that currently, the organizer has promised to make an attempt to pay us back. Only time will tell how that all works out.

Those of you who know me, know that I try to find the positive in all things. Last week, one of the speakers, Ben Hartley, had the best quote

"Worse things have happened to better people."

Truth bomb my friends.

I cannot tell you how proud I am to be included amongst the line up of speakers at this conference. Every one of them are shining stars--wonderful talents, incredible presenters/educators and, most importantly, outstanding people. I want to encourage any photographers who read this post to support them in any way possible so I am going to link to their sites.

James Day, Jonathon Suckling, Jenna Kutcher, Nicole Ashley, Kelly Redinger, Wyn Wiley, Bryan Caporicci, Ben Hartley, Jennifer Moher, Hugh Whitaker, Thierry Joubert, Mathieu Louis-Seize, Laurent Martin, Shari & Mike, Scott Wyden Kivovitz.

Despite the outcome, I am grateful for the experience. The people I met have filled my bucket with so much gratitude and amazingness. I am choosing to hold onto that.

You live and learn my friends. You live and learn.

~ Dana
