Mentoring and Online Workshops

I am passionate about photography. I love everything about it. But, I am equally as passionate about artists earning enough money to help contribute to their family's finances. Just because we are artists does not mean that we need to be starving.

To this end, I am offering several mentoring opportunities with me throughout the winter and spring. I would also love to come to your city and offer an in person workshop--just email me to start the conversation.

Pricing for success in the digital age - online course

$200(+gst) *** this is in CANADIAN dollars so there is a considerable savings to my American friends. Just saying. I am running this course for two weeks in March...making it a bit faster than the last time as I found that 4 weeks was simply too long.

Registration is open here :

The portrait industry is having a bit of trouble these days. Sooooooooo many photographers...decent photographers....have no idea how to price themselves and, because of that, they are earning next to nothing. As an industry, we spend a lot of time focused on how to create, but very little of that creating has to do with our businesses and how to make them successful. And...artists are funny...the money kind of scares them. But, it shouldn't!!! You need money--not only for LIFE ESSENTIALS, but also to help fund creative projects that are burning deep within you so that you can grow as an artist and maintain your creative edge. That time you spend away from your family is worth a lot. You need to get paid for the time you spend working on someone else's images because time away from your kids means you are missing something...sometimes something big like a birthday party or first steps. And, sometimes something small, like being the one to nurse them through a fever or see them reach that video game high score. And, I know...because, in the blink of an eye, my son has all of a sudden become a few inches taller than me. And, even though I am a very present parent, I feel like I missed a bunch of it. I'm a working mom. THAT is how life goes....but, if I wasn't getting paid a decent salary during that time I missed--I don't care how much I love my job--I would become bitter with it.

So, to combat this problem, I have created a business course that will help you create a business to meet your needs--both financial and personal. I won't just tell you to 'raise your rates'...I will give you the tools to determine exactly how you want to build your own business to meet your unique needs. We are all different so there is no one size fits all answer. Together, we will help uncover your answers so you can create a business that doesn't just meet short term needs, but provides you with sustainability over the long run.

What you will get:

A private Facebook group to offer support while you work through the class, and a fresh perspective on how to make your business sustainable while creating work that fulfills your artistic needs.

You will truly be able to go at your own pace with the material provided. All of it will be posted up front, and you will be encouraged to do the homework and post it for feedback.

By the end of the course, you will have done the math to determine exactly what you need to be charging in order to create a business that meets your family's needs while feeding your creativity. You will also be shown multiple ways to reach that price and support in deciding which one is right for you and your business.

See what others have to say about the course...

Truly, I cannot thank Dana enough for everything she gave us (including her heart) during our time together. Her passion for the industry is refreshing and I left feeling so inspired and excited. Not only was Dana an amazing teacher and incredibly resourceful, she was a blast to spend time with as she came with a ton of laughter and her heart on her sleeve (my kind of person). I would highly recommend Dana’s workshop to anyone wanting to take their passion and business to the level of success. You will not regret it...and BONUS, you get to hang with the talented “Dana Pugh” for the day, total win! Forever grateful, thank you.

I met Dana two years ago at a photography retreat, where I was instantly drawn to her honesty and her ability to make anything fun. Last year she invited me to be a part of the 5 minute project, which is something she started and shared with photographers to join along side her. I think this speaks volumes of her heart for the photography community. She could have kept the project to herself, but she choose to watch us and many others grow in it. She truly wants the best for others, and has given not only me, but so many others the tools on how to be successful in this business. This past spring she came to BC and mentored a group of us on the business side of photography. That course taught me to value my time, and opened my eyes to things I never would have seen on my own, I can truthfully say she changed my life and my family’s life. I am so grateful to have met her, to have had her influence in my career and I know I wouldn’t be where I am today without her encouragement and knowledge.

Dana’s business workshop was pretty much life changing. I know that is such a cliche thing to say but it really was. I was spinning in circles, spending money on my business that I did not have, not able to update my gear or purchase the necessary things to run a proper business because I was not making any actual money. I was at a point where I was ready to throw in the towel. I so love what I do, and that thought made me want to cry.. actually it did make me cry numerous times. I was charging what I thought was the going rate for photography and it seemed like a decent amount. I was pouring my heart and soul into creating images and memories for my clients and getting nothing in return. In the end, after all was said and done, not only was I costing our family money, but I was taking away very valuable and precious time from those that I love most. I was doing too many sessions and not charging close to the amount I needed to in order to make a living and help to support our family. I was heading out on weekends, staying up late to edit.. but for what? There was no return on investment. Thanks to Dana, I started to realize this and that something had to change. Never mind my husband was losing his patience in me spending our families money to run my business for other people. So I made some big changes pretty much overnight. This would work or it wouldn’t. If it did (and it has!) I would be ecstatic. And if it didn’t.. Well there was no reason I still couldn’t take photos and practice my art for myself and I was totally ok with that because I was done treating my business the way I had been. I was done not spending time with my family for very little return. Now I think of the workshop I went to with Dana and to be honest, I would have paid 10x more to attend (although at the time I wouldn’t have been able to because of what I was charging. ha!). It was without a doubt life changing. I now value my time, my art, my family, and my clients who hire me to do their family photos. I look back and shake my head and for the first time I see a sustainable career ahead of me doing what I love.
